As expected there were changes in formation and personnel as a result of Saintfiet’s departure.  Yanga lined up in a 4-4-2 with Chuji playing a deeper role in midfield than Niyonzima who was pushed slightly higher up the field while Twite moved to rightback. Out went Domayo and in came Khalfan who played out wide on the right. JKT Ruvu deployed a similar formation but looked more like a 4-1-3-2. As a result this was not a very tactical game but poor defending is what gave Yanga the win.

The ease with which Yanga managed to get behind their opponents defense was shocking. Yanga did manage to play the ball out wide using the whole width of the pitch but their opponents made it easier for them with some dreadful defending.  With the game being dull on the tactical front below are some observations with regards to JKT Ruvu.

Their positional play during the defensive phase was poor. They failed to remain compact and thus made it easy for Yanga to play through them.  The second goal they conceded also came from poor positional play with regards to the right fullback. With Msuva attacking down his wing he positioned himself  anticipating an inward pass to one of the midfielders other than remaining in position to prevent Msuva getting behind him.  His movement left space behind him which the Yanga player managed to exploit and cross the ball.

Their buildup play was predictable with the goalkeeper always distributing the ball to a player on his right hand side. The back four failed to form an arc with one of the central defenders pushing up way too quickly. This meant they could not r circulate the ball across the backline so as to switch play and ended up forcing the play.

The marking during throw ins was so lax that their opponents managed to create chances one falling to Niyonzima who found himself free to head a ball towards goal and the other a cross which the keeper after having collected it some how conspired to have it end at the back of the net.
With all the shambolic defending on display they can go home with too positives. One is that they managed to prevent Yanga building out from the back during goal kicks. It was almost a man to man marking job with
Yanga players failing to shake off their markers. The second being that they did have good spells of possession only thing lacking was the penetration.

Yanga’s win has more to do with Ruvu’s poor defending than a tactical master stroke from Minziro. Thee were no particular tactical movements that one cn pinpoint as a cause for the win and understandably so having taken the reigns just a day ago. With both teams setup with similar  formations  then the end result  could only be determined by pure individual brilliance, set piece or as in today’s case poor defending. Saintfiet’s 3-4-1-2 definitely needed to be polished but with his departure we might have been denied a chance to witness tactically interesting matches.
